My experience was similar, udev comes in with hotplug, when I put it
on a Ubuntu box, it basically made complete toast of it and I
haven't had time to unpick it (I will have to in the next couple of
weeks).

You can get a certain amount of easy mounting without these, but it
does seem like everyone sees them as the way forward.
