[LUG] udev awkwardness

Wondering if anyone on the list has much experience with udev,
the "new, improved, more environmentally friendly" replacement
for /dev.

I installed it today on my home system (debian sid, 2.6.8 kernel) largely
to see if I could get my usb stick and cds etc automounting. However
due to this change, not only would X not start (I use the closed
source nvidia drivers), but I wasn't getting any sound either.

Anyone have any ideas how to set things up so that both of these work
with udev installed, as I have since removed it and gone ,back to the
old devfs system which everything runs under quite happily.
