Sorry, forgot to mention that I currently don't have a phone connection.
Beside BT what companies in Plymouth provide the phone line?

The people that used to be Eurobell (are they Telewest now?) were pretty good.

When I lived in Plymouth as a student we got Cable TV + telephone for a whole £1
more than BT were asking for Telephone only.

When my sister and brother-in-law got their own flat in Plymouth, they took up the
same deal and then got Cable Internet with it. The engineer that came around had a
selection of "modems" but most of them (at the time) were actually dual USB/Ethernet
devices, so were proper routers.

If, however, you decide to go for ADSL, then I can recommend www.prodigynet.co.uk.
They're not exactly local (I think the guy I spoke to said they were based in
Sheffield), but they provide a pure wires-only service at a good price. They don't
actively support Linux, but then they don't actively support *any* OS as far as I'm
aware. Oh, and they don't cap your connection.

Grant.
