Thanks Neil, I'm using v1.4.

Perhaps I'm missing something here (probably - as I've got a rotten
cold  /brain/nul), but isn't that what Alex suggested, i.e. add a <red> NIC
to my IPcop box and connect to the router/modem using 10.0.0.1/10.0.0.2 as
addresses?

Where possable set the red interface to DHCP, and if supported get the modem 
to act as a bridge (true modems do this)

This way the red interface will have the external IP address...
