In the meantime I've just tried Peter's k3b suggestion and burnt the whole 4.1 Gb in 75mins. The wife considers it simple and easy to do so we'll stick with k3b for the time being. Of course 4.1 GB is approaching the limit of a single DVD so some form of compression will soon be neccessary. Or perhaps it'll simply be easier to just use another DVD.
