One bit I will add to this.
If you don't have the skills to help directly in the coding (like I don't) one 
thing you can do is to help test alpha/beta versions. One oft quoted reason 
for not helping test software is that your machine is your only production 
machine and you can't risk said machine, the answer is 'User Mode Linux' - it 
works and doesn't compromise your primary OS.
