I agree with Alan. I don't think the USB modem is a good idea at all. I've
got a Netgear DG834G wireless router and I like it a lot. These do not
need a driver and you can configure the firewall (or leave it alone). 
Non-wireless is ok too if you don't intend ever to experiment with wireless
(long summer afternoons in the garden with your laptop on your knee ...)
