I tried "dovecot" next. dovecot does both pop3 and imap, and spop3 and simap, with mailbox or maildir.
I like dovecot, but I found setting it up fiddlier than I would have liked. I haven't got the logging 100% right yet, but I am using it as a quick and dirty imap server. Again the focus seems to be on lots of users, not shared folders for small businesses.
Debian has both prepackaged, although I think one might only be in testing.
