RE: [LUG] laptop batteries

Niel Said:

1. Does anyone know of a recovery method for failed laptop batteries?
2. Does anyone know of a cheap source of laptop batteries? (doubtful)

I have an old laptop I rescued from the tip, its a 286 (lol), but it fits
freedos & freegem (anyone remember GEM ?). Anyway, in order to find out if
this thing still worked (its power connectors / adapter was missing) I got a
"free" (two steam loco mags + postage to the states) car lighter socket
adapter. It was worth the effort just to find the thing worked OK. Anyway I
went into my local LIDL the other day where selling a rechargable gel
battery (size of half a breeze block but not as heavy) that has lots of
connectors (including a car lighter socket. So now I have 1/2 breeze block
battery to car ligher socket adapter to 286 laptop. Battery gives approx 5-7
hours before recharge necessary (I guess thats the advantage of carrying a
brick around with you or maybe it says something about the power consumption
286 ?).

Its not as "portable" as I would like (probably get some odd looks in the
park if I took it out), but it does function. Battery costs £15.00 give or
take a penny. Its bright red by the way you know a typical laptop colour,
really blends in !

3. Does anyone want a laptop WITHOUT the battery? (going cheap).
(I'll make sure the filesystem is wiped v.clean and put a new distro
on it)

Im always looking for working laptops (with some sort of power supply) to
send to the Philippines (small footprint), if the price is right I dont mind
paying ;-) , what price where you looking at ? - email me off group.

Thanks

Tom.
