I use Thunderbird as well. I'm not sure what Trevor means by
auto-archive but it does the rest. I have had no problems with it and

auto-archive is best left to a specialist program like MHonArc (which runs the
DCLUG archive) and a simple cron job. I've been using that at home ever since
I started with DCLUG.

I have tried mozilla and its derivatives main problem is it hangs,
fails on reply to and spell checking that sometimes works.

Thunderbird doesn't give you multiple reply options. If there is a
Reply-to it will use it otherwise it goes to the From address.

Which is a problem with properly configured mailing lists which use List-Id or
X-Mailing-List headers - the reply goes to the author, not the list.

Kmail seem not to be able to handle multi mail accounts.

Look under Settings->Configure KMail. Click on Network and select the
Receiving tab. You can add as many accounts as you want.

I think what was intended here was multiple people at one email address -
that's a job for filtering. KMail has filters, OR you can use maildrop (an
easier version of procmail) to filter the email directly into local
mailboxes.

ximian does not appear to to do a lot at all.

If you mean Evolution, I always thought it did too much!

Except verify inline sigs.

Evolution is a capable email client.

What about mutt? Are you even considering console email clients?
