Are you sure?  I thought that was only when you logged in on the command 
line.  I might be wrong, of course... :-)

KDE and Gnome both have files in your home directory which you can place 
commands to be run on login.  I remember doing it a while back to get 
xscreensaver to run.  Unfortunately I can't remember what the files are 
called, so I'm afraid you'll either have to root around a bit or Google 
for it.
