This should be copied to ~ as .bashrc - then when you next login, .bash_profile will be run, as dictated in .bashrc. There are other options on bashrc that a lot of people enable, like colours for ls, aliases and other tweaks.

Are you sure? I thought that was only when you logged in on the command line. I might be wrong, of course... :-)


KDE and Gnome both have files in your home directory which you can place commands to be run on login. I remember doing it a while back to get xscreensaver to run. Unfortunately I can't remember what the files are called, so I'm afraid you'll either have to root around a bit or Google for it.
