Re: [LUG] Time for a stupid question

One of the servers I'm looking after is a big Dell PowerEdge box, which has an
external Dell PowerVault disk array attached to it.

The PowerVault box is showing an alert, and the screen on the front of the
PowerEdge is saying DISK FAIL.

Fairly conclusive, you might think...

But, how in Linux do I find out which disk has failed? How can I find out how
the array is configured? Etc. etc.

Most external disk arrays present as SCSI devices - and Linux (or other
*nix or Windows) have no way of knowing what is happening except via the
specific interface provided by the vendor.

Try the Dell Linux Poweredge mailing list for more informed comment.

Usually they provide a serial or other non-SCSI interface to the device
- as BIOS interface implies downtime and that is what these devices are
designed to avoid.

The easy way to spoke the broken disk is usually from the LED's ;)
