[LUG] OT Timebank -

I have pasted this from the timebank (volunteer agency or something),
newsletter, Not sure if anyone or knows anyone who is 11 - 19 and
interested in Linux, but this could be a good opportunity to promote Linux
and open source and get help doing so.

The holidays are quickly approaching and there's no better time to
volunteer. Thousands of charities and community organisations across the UK
will be working throughout the holiday period to provide essential support
and services to individuals and communities in need.
In this newsletter, we've put together an essential guide of how you can
give your time during the holiday; you'll find details of organisations that
need your help and inspirational stories of why others give their time and
skills.

The What if... Campaign

'What If...' is a new campaign to recruit volunteers to help young people in
danger of turning to crime, run in partnership by TimeBank and Crime
Concern. Crime Concern runs over 30 youth involvement projects across
England and Wales, and volunteers are crucial to their success.

Volunteer opportunities include one-to-one mentoring, assisting youth
projects with activity programmes, acting as a peer drug educator in the
prevention of drugs and substance misuse, and administrative support for
regional offices. Potential volunteers must be over 21, be available for a
minimum of 2 hours a week.

For more information or to register please call 0845 601 4008 or visit
www.timebank.org.uk/whatif where you can also play our new, improved,
festive online crime fighting game.

Help the Hospices campaign

In the New Year, TimeBank will be launching '13 Days', a campaign run in
partnership with the umbrella organisation for the hospice movement in the
UK, Help the Hospices. The campaign is called '13 Days' because thirteen
days is the average length of time a person spends in a hospice. Together,
TimeBank and Help the Hospices are aiming to raise awareness of the diverse
and rewarding volunteering opportunities available to those volunteering in
hospices, and encourage a younger audience to give time, primarily but not
exclusively those aged between 20 and 35. Hospices are independently funded
and without the time of their existing volunteers, hospice work could not
continue

Hospices care for adults and children who are seriously ill, and who face
the end of life because their illness can't be cured. Care goes beyond
simply providing medical treatment for patients and aims to meet all the
needs - physical, emotional, social and spiritual - of people facing
terminal illness. This means that there may be a broader range of
volunteering opportunities available than you would have first thought, with
volunteers arranging visits from pets to their owners, providing beauty
treatments, or even mixing a gin and tonic for patients. If you would like
to learn more about '13 Days' and hospice volunteering, then log onto
www.timebank.org.uk/13days or call 0845 601 4008.

Energize

TimeBank has just launched Energize, a website designed for 11 - 19 year
olds who want to take positive action in their school, college or local
community. Energize provides support, advice, and information for young
people looking to turn their ideas into a reality, whether they want to make
themselves heard, change things or learn new skills.

Energize can help young people to improve their career prospects by offering
them the opportunity to gain experience and skills which are transferable to
other areas of their lives. Already Energize has produced some real success
stories, such as 16 year-old Phoebe Lewis who set up a radio station with
her friends as she was fed up with the misrepresentation of hip-hop music in
the media.

So if you know a young person aged between 11 and 19 who is passionate about
an issue and wants to make things happen, tell them to log onto Energize and
get active! www.timebank.org.uk/energize
