If you're interested in a PVR-type system, have a look at Freevo - 
http://freevo.sourceforge.net/.

It will download and display TV listings, let you schedule recordings, play 
MP3s, DVD etc. etc.
As the name implies, it's intended as a replacement for a TiVo.
