I have taken the stance that unstable is fine for the desktop. :)

Your sources.list I assume is setup for stable. An upgrade in this case
would only upgrade your stable disb.

Use aptitude.

bunk? I don't understand this term. 

I think Debian packages of Openoffice 1.1 are absolutely fantastic.

ping is in base. :)

When you need something, Debian lets you easily install it. Off the top
of my head, I think the first things I generally install on a base
install is vim and screen.
