[LUG] Unrecoverable Crash

Evening All,occasionally whilst listening to the odd bit of music or for that
matter playing a game i get a nasty crash sound loops like a stuck record,
screen freezes no mouse movement etc, and keyboard totally locks eg num lock
frozen ctrl-alt backspace /ctrl-alt delete have no effect.
Arts is disabled as this is troublesome with certain apps i use.
running suse 8.2 at the moment with deflt suse kernel 2.4.20.
Question is which logs if any could give me a clue as to what errant process
is causing the problem.
Its very random and is a minor irritation but is annoying because i can't
recover from it and it results in a hard reset which is rather unhealthy to
say the least.
It happens in a variety of applications and does not seem to have an obvious
pattern.
Just wonder where would be a good place to start investigating the cause to
try and resolve the cause.
Thought of a soundcard/alsa snag so tried both a C-media chipped card and a SB
4.1 pci card results are similar.
Any thoughts people?

Cheers,

Lee
