Have you tried parted? I think it is suppose to handle the case where
the software claims the disk is smaller than the hardware....

Should just be a case of extending the partition, then extending the
file system.

I once upgraded an HP system in this way (to make the root disk bigger,
from 1GB to 9GB) - actually HP had a special command to do the DD to
tape for you, but the software config of LVM limited the number of
blocks that could be used, so in the end they could only use 2GB of the
disk, but 9GB was the smallest you could buy from HP then.
