Yes very annoying, Speaking of which, I run clam-anti virus on my linux server to protect all my windows machines from these nasty email worms/viruses (which it does a very good job). I have modified the script it uses (trashscan) to run the virus checker against emails so it does NOT send the sender notification for precisly the above reason. I have also moded it to print the name of the virus in the user notification email. If anybody is running clam-av via trashscan they are welcome to my version of the script. I think versions of clam-av/openantivirus are also avaiable as a windows "proxy" for email scanning for those of you "forced" to use windows but would like a open source solution to some of your problems.
