-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I've only just got around to trying KDE3.1 but NOT by upgrading. I managed to completely trash my Debian native install and got into an IMMENSE dependency morass with dpkg. Who says Debian is easy to upgrade?? apt refused to recognise the LXF DVD - not Debian - and there was NO way I was going to let it loose on the internet trying to get the whole KDE3.1 upgrade. KDE on Debian now no longer exists - I haven't deleted it, it just has disappeared from the login selection and won't start from a console login. Just how can people upgrade from KDE3 to KDE3.1 - I have all the packages (debian, rpm or tar.gz - take your pick but I don't fancy compiling the whole of KDE from tarballs) but I can't upgrade. So? I went for the easy route (well, easy when you've got a spare 60Gb hard drive around) - I installed yet another distro. Yoper. (Using it now). Very fast installation, worked easily off the DHCP router, comes with KDE3.1, OOo, Mozilla, KDevelop, Edutainment programs, and I was most impressed to find Kgpg in the screenshot from LXF. A graphical GnuPG/PGP key management / sign / verification / import / export tool. Very neat, very tidy and with the sole exception of editing a key, it does all the tasks you could want from gpg. KMail has also improved and is meant to have that MIME thingy that allows me to verify attached signatures for messages from people using clients like Evolution and Mutt. I notice that it still sends my email inline and so far I haven't received a MIME format signed email to test it. (Invitation?) I'll give Yoper a little more time to live with (I've found a few niggles already) and I'll post a review on the site. If others have got advice on upgrading to KDE3.1 WITHOUT trashing the install and without compiling from tarballs, I'd like to know. I managed to upgrade KDE from v2 to v3 OK, I was expecting 3.0 to 3.1 to be easier. Typical. :-) - -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.codehelp.co.uk http://www.dclug.org.uk http://www.wewantbroadband.co.uk/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+ifnsiAEJSii8s+MRAmVTAJ4jl+Suw8+ArMqZc5iODOiIyH9IjgCfXJQR Ns7m98Oh+1CtBMffF89R/B4= =2c2N -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
