No.. better still.. me being a numpty... portmap was not staying
resident.. got over that by (yeah this looks nasty)

 /sbin/portmap -d &
 ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1

as i also hadn't loaded lo as a network interface... ! (oops)

looks like i am almost there.. i'll keep you all posted...
