(Who has an *interesting* website ...)

are you sure you're looking at my site? !! ;)

Yep, but I'm really old so I like an integrated debugger (and because of a
quirk of what I do for a living, I'm often writing quick-and-dirty once-off
C programs which never get a release compilation I spend a lot of time in
it...)

And I have to go back to MSVC quite a bit (the Nokia SDK's a case in point
- they had to put a cross-compiler out there and that's where they put it)
so I need something I can configure and forget (because I surely will
forget it !)

I've had extended emacs recommended before now, but my mind's been poisoned
by vi and I can't remember all those state commands (I told you .. I'm
old...)

KDevelop 3, aka Gideon looks like it may be really nice and usable, providing
it's more stable than the current Kdevelop, with lots of nice features.

I tried kdevelop (i know what you mean about compiling it..!) a few months
back, and got most pissed off with it and reverted to console tools when it
died on me without saving the work and i lost about 30 minutes of intense
coding :/

this months linux format has reviews of all the c++ ide's, and the ones
reviewed seem to be:

anjuta (gnome) 8 out of 10
code forge 8/10 (not open source - $40)
kdevelop 9/10
kylix open edition 7/10
code crusador 4/10
qide 5/10

qucik search on google should reveal them.

tbh, the only one which looks like it may be up to the job may be anjuta,
which has lots of interesting features too. however, it's GNOME, *shudder*
;)

i think the plain hard truth is that there is no nice shiny replacment for
MSVC yet, if you don't like kdevelop or emacs.

maybe Gideon will fill this gap, i may even start to use it if an X editor i
like appears out of thin air and is embeddeable ;)

i do miss MSVC's class completion though (mmmmm.....). kdevelop can do it,
however, it's a bit of a hack/patch too :/
