The Jabber protocols do look a bit immature atm. IRC can be just as
unreliable, but there are usually serveral connected servers, so there
is much more fallback.

Unfortunatly at the end of the day, Yahoo IM and ICQ etc. have good
clients, and have the sense of reliability (at least to me) today. :/

There is also a gui version of irssi, www.irssi.org.
