have unmounted the dvd, and stuck it in my other machine
to re-read the installation instructions

does lilo give you a prompt ?

If so try

Lilo: linux init=/bin/sh

when you get the shell run `passwd root`

Neil
(Who starts a new job on Monday 9am.. W00T.. BTOpenWorld.. hehehe)

that gives an 'Authentication token maniputulation error' !

adduser david did not work either at this stage,
as couldn't exec either 'groupadd' or 'groupdel' !

this system looks hosed !

dave

Can you run baseconfig from that prompt ?

Neil

at this stage machine is now running suse8.0 (see
my emails in the debian-boot mail list). given
that vi refused to work, and the partition
appeared to be read-only. i don't think baseconfig
would run
