Take the word hackers, it's too easy to spell, and guess, so play around
with letters, e.g e becomes 3, and s becomes 5 so

try

hack3r5. or Linux could be lin1x. a mixture of letters and numbers is also
nice so perhaps m0rgad2418 - this would have your name and 2418 - kernel
2.4.18 - or what ever kernel you are using

it really depends on how accessable the system is to others, if it's your
own system at home then you can probably cut corners, if it's a works
system and you are sys admin then you need to use the above type passwords,
length, and mixture of lower/upper case, and numbers. even throwin a few
*/+ type characters,

A good firewall properly set up should also help, again even that will
probably have a password,

I think it also depends on if you system is always on the net or a dialup
machine, the former needing more firewall / proxy protection perhaps.

Any comments from other users helpful

Paul

paul, that was not the problem

turned out the default install would not work.
(this login failure was at the first reboot,
before i was asked to enter default password
details !)

when i changed to the bf2.4 install everything
worked as expected.

best regards
