It is a SCSI tape drive (/dev/st0 or /dev/tape) and i am trying to use

has used ? a tk app or a console based, v.simple tool is what i want...

so guys.. over to you....

Whilst trying to find a simple graphical tool - try using "tar"
just to make sure your data is safe.

Good GUI interface to a tape backup system - hmm haven't seen
one of those since Jumbo tape backup for DOS, and that was only
menu driven.

I mean it, and I've seen a LOT of computer system since 1991.
The closest I've seen to Jumbo tape backup for DOS, is the Unix
dump command, but it worries unnecessarily about block
size<sic>, and doesn't handle tape changes quite as elegantly,
and doesn't really have a GUI.

The worst problem with graphical backup systems is they often
need graphical restores, so if you have to install as far as
getting X working before you can restore..... Heck you might as
well be running Windows NT ;)
