HTML and XML are subsets of SGML.

With the greatest of respect, that's complete bollocks, as has already
been discussed in this thread.

HTML is to XML as a WinZip (written in C++) is to Java.

Eh?

HTML is an application of SGML, not XML.

XHTML is really nice as it forces nice code layout. all tags must be
complete and in lower case for example. Older versions of HTML were less
strict.

XHTML is the XML version of HTML. That is, you have to have all the
closed tags, quoted attributes, etc and consiquently, it's a right
ballache to write by hand. It's also larger, data-wise, but that
doesn't really matter when images are involved :)
