Phew, try using some full stops and paragraphs, man ;-)

I'm afraid only have a brief experience of SuSE when I installed 7.1 because
the guy who was sent to "buy linux" got that one, as it had the biggest box
(as good a reason as any, IMHO!). I tried installing it on some fairly old
hardware, but kinda gave up and begged for mercy. As soon as the accountant
had nodded his magic head, they gave me £200 to spend on hardware and I had
built a new machine and got linux up and running that afternoon 8-)

Anyway, to address some of your points: If you don't have any details for
your monitor, just choose one of the "standard" options. Try moving down the
list (ie. increasing in specification) until it blows up ;-) If you just get
a blank or garbled screen, you've reached its limits. Just wait a few
seconds and leave it on the last setting that worked. If that's still
flickery, buy a decent screen!

I agree that having to unpack tarballs and compile code yourself is a bit of
a pain in the arse. I haven't got an amazingly fast machine, either, so it
tends to take a while. What's even worse is when you go through that and
find it doesn't work, usually due to an "unsatisfied dependency" on a library
you don't have.

That said, most programs are available in RPM format (at least the stable
versions, anyway). Download that and type 'rpm -i <filename>' and that's
about it! Often it will spit out a list of 'unsatisfied dependencies', but
if you search for these on http://fr2.rpmfind.net you will usually find
packages that provide this libraries quite quickly.

I guess it would be nice if there was a program that could search (and maybe
even download and install) these libraries automatically for you; does anyone
know if such a program is available?
