Thanks, everyone, especially Matthew Browning for giving me the steer!

I've now got it sorted:

I have a second drive with a different installation on which I store DLed rpm 
& tgz files. This was given default fstab listing without the exec option set!

Setting fstab for the mount point to "exec" and a remount brought it up 
working.
