is there any other DNS server apart from BIND which could act as a lookup only name server that you know of? especially one which uses less resources,
There are others, djbdns has already been mentioned, but I'm sure there was a 'simple DNS' type program - not the Windows one. A quick trawl of google shows up 'www.maradns.org', but don't ask me about it. I've never used it. In terms of computer resources I must agree with the others that generally the DNS is lightweight. It does, and always has been, memory intensive, but this is only a problem if you're short of memory. BIND 9.2.0 will let you restrict the amount of memory used anyway. At present the Uni uses two Sun ultra 10's (128MB memory) for its local name servers. Neither machine is doing much at all, despite getting an average of several requests per second. This is low usage. My work PC (P133, 128MB) runs a caching only server and it is not noticeable at all. If you really want DNS and not just a hosts file, then try bind or djbdns. I'm afraid we've used bind since we first got IP so I can't really comment on djbdns. However, I would say read the DNS-HOWTO, and if you can get a copy of the 'DNS and BIND' book, then that has some introductory stuff in it. If you're looking at the bind docs, and worried about all the options, then don't. We use very few of them, so you will probably only need a few.
