Re: [LUG] dns howto

thanks john,

is there any other DNS server apart from BIND which could act as a lookup only name server that you know of? especially one which uses less resources,

cheers,

kev

i don't know your set up but why don't you just use the /etc/hosts file. apparently DNS/BIND is a bit difficult to set up.

Hmm, well maybe. Like a lot of things it looks, or maybe is, difficult to
set up. The problem is once you have done it, and you can see how it all
hangs together, then it is no longer a problem :-) However, explaining *how*
to get to that stage is just as awkward :-)

I would suggest trying to locate a DNS (or named/bind) HOWTO file - probably
is one somewhere.

if you do set it up successfully let us know - it may be useful to have it running on the proxy server to speed up some web browsing,

If the proxy is on the same subnet as the name server (and assuming a fast
network), then you probably won't need a local name server. If it isn't
then, yes, setup a caching name server. However, the name server uses memory
as does your proxy so you may need to tweak them a bit - we restrict the
name server to about 32MB of memory.

I run an apache server and at the moment I have to
give the IP address i.e. http://1.1.1.1/ but
http://linuxmachine/ would be much better!!

I assumed the '1.1.1.1' was just an example :-) If not, then yes this should
be a private address as suggested.
