Right!

Perl program, load it all in (assuming it's not massive) splitting it
into records as you go. As you do this, grab the value to sort by, be
that by unpacking or otherwise. Cache this value. 

Depending on the type of data this is, and how much of it is sort key,
depends on the way you might want to next.

If you give me some data, I'll try it.

If they are binary, what would you like to sort them by?

Anything at all would be a step in the right direction.

OK, what do they want to access them by?
