[LUG] pdflatex and ps2pdf problems

pdflatex problem:
Can't get it to work with EPS figures. 

ps2pdf probelm:
ps2pdf uses pdfwrite which doesn't support fonts properly. It only works
with built in fonts.

I have just started using Tex for my technical documents, I can print
these documents fine but cannot get any PDF generation programs to do a
decent job. Latex seems to work fine with EPS figures but pdflatex
complains of a LaTeX Error: Unknown graphics extension: .eps.

Any suggestions of what I can use to produce PDFs that will work with
EPS figures in the tex source file.
