The modem is a 56K US robotics. The first few AT commands reset the modem,
loudness, etc. The last 2 (as far as I remember) set it up for 56K speed.
Either way, just letting minicom reset the modem and then issuing an ATDT to
the ISP gives the same result (my first thought was a speed problem, but
no). As can be seen I get a connect, but no login prompt. It may well be
that they just don't like people connecting directly like this, and that
kppp can handle it while pppd can't. The latter uses 'chat' to connect and
'expect' type statements of what it expects to see from the ISP (sorry, I'm
sure you know all this :-) ), and since it doesn't see a login prompt, it
doesn't send anything (perhaps I should just remove the expect stmt looking
for the prompt?).
