thanks jon and andrew,

i'd already contacted BTO and they were saying that if non windows OS was 
used then they would not cover for any problems - i tried to get them to 
be more specific but they remained vague.

thanks for the testimonial RE eclipse - they host a windows server for my 
work and we've met them at a couple of shows and they seem enthusiastic 
about what they are doing.

the USB option is cheaper and sounds good but a difficulty is that i 
prefer to stick to debian - and cos the kernel is still 2.2 i'm not sure 
about USB support.  but i'm sure there will be a way - and - like 
everything else in linux - once its working at least it stays working!
