Nope use ntpd.conf - you probably have it installed, and
just need to (update! &) configure it.

Those nice people at Rugby provide an accurate time feed for
the whole Internet.

The main issue is that xntpd (the time daemon) had a recent
buffer overflow, so definitely upgrade to the latest version
available and check status (The author was having trouble
with understanding the BugTraq report as I recall).

ntpdate sets the time on booting, and xntpd keeps adjusting
it using the kernel adjtimed system call.

As adjtimed need root access the daemon must run as root, so
buffer overflows are potentially extra nasty.

Most ISP's provide an NTP server as part of the service;
e.g. ntp.demon.co.uk ntp1.demon.co.uk ntp2.demon.co.uk
So you can firewall as appropriate.

ntp has it's own newsgroup - so if you get stuck you know
where to turn.
