I'm pretty sure it started for its own reasons rather than anything to do
with KDE, although there was a big skirmish when KDE first came out as it
used a proprietary library - now the library, QT is open source certified
(iirc).

Gnome and KDE have very different design ideals and move in different
directions, I prefer the direction Gnome is taking as KDE started as a
free CDE clone and has moved on from there but still has that kind of
heritage where as GNOME started with a clean(ish) slate and makes heavy
use of corba to provide a modern base for a desktop environment, GNOME is
also designed to work with GTK, GDK, etc and provide the 'official' GNU
desktop environment.

Fortunately KDE and Gnome developers have had far less animosity than
their respective users and are working to provide compatability and a
standard interface for wm's.
