[LUG] Linux visual classes

Hi All,

My first posting and a request for help!

How do I convince Linux that it can support 8 bit Pseudocolor AND 24 bit
Truecolor at the same time? I wish to use 24 bit depth as default as I
have a very nice monitor but software I am using (an IDL program) needs
8 bit depth. I have edited the XF86Config file to add another "Display"
Subsection to the Screen Section but it defaults to 8 bit unless I tell
it otherwise and then doesn't provide the other depth options, (checked
using xdpyinfo).

The Screen Section of XF86Config looks like:

Section "Screen"
    Indentifier "Screen1"
    Device "nVidia Corporation|NV15 (Geforce2 GTS)"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Subsection "Display"
    	Depth 8
	Modes "1028x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    Subsection "Display"
    	Depth 24
	Modes "1028x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

And the output of xdpyinfo gives number of visuals: 9
  default visual id: 0x21
  visual:
    visual id: 0x21
    class: TrueColor
    depth: 24 planes
available colormap entries: 256 per subfield
    red, green, blue masks: 0xff0000, 0xff00, 0xff
significant bits in color specification: 8 bits
  visual:
    visual id: 0x22
    class: DirectColor
    depth: 24 planes
available colormap entries: 256 per subfield
    red, green, blue masks: 0xff0000, 0xff00, 0xff
significant bits in color specification: 8 bits
....

All using 24 planes, no options for 8 bit depth.

This works on our UNIX Suns why not the Linux PC? Thankyou

Kate
