Re: [LUG] Help with my Linux

>>

I wish to find someone who can help. I have recently after many difficulties
multibooted with a version of Red Hat Linux and using KDE. My sound, and
even more of a problem my modem doesn't work.
<<

A couple of pointers:
1. Internal Windows modems rarely work with Linux because they rely on
Windows virtual device drives which have not been re-written for Linux.
External modems (nearly) always work or alternatively you can do what I
did - if you have a second PC around running Windows, use that to connect
and share the connection. (Easier with Windows98 Second Edition than with
Win95 or Win98 1st ed.)

2. Get yourself a good Linux book, there are some described on my own site
(www.codehelp.co.uk/code/codebooks.shtml), PCWorld also have some good
books. Look for the O'Reilly series - the Linux one is Linux in a Nutshell -
also SAMS, Teach yourself Linux in 10 minutes.

>>
Where may I purchase a reasonably priced modem that will work with Linux? I
have the modem compatibility lists but it is impossible to identify from
suppliers list which one work and which don't and most suppliers don't know
what their modems are.Is this the place I can ask this question?
<<

Yes. External modems are still around and will still give you the same
connection speeds. You can also turn the volume off.

>>
Also I seem to be unable to change my Monitor resolution: I am locked into
640 X 480 True Colour (32bit) but I know I have support for 800 X 600 and
1024 X 768. I have tried to go to Xconfigurator but sem to be unable to run
it - just nothing happens.
<<

I use Mandrake (7.0 to start with, 7.1 wouldn't install but 7.2 is fine.)
and the configuration programs also had a few problems with my monitor.
Currently, I have to adjust the horizontal and vertical positions (relative
to a Windows / DOS / Linux console session) when I load the graphical Linux
(X-Windows). (Nothing to do with Microsoft.) Keep trying.

>>
Being a complete novice for Linux (or Unix commands) please someone tell me
what to do in simple language. It maybe I just don't understand how to "Run"
something in Linux.
<<

There are also a few tips (just a few) on the rest of the codehelp site on
how Linux deals with ex-Windows users.
