Hi Richard
This sort of intermittent problem can be difficult to resolve, and may be why the computer was retired in the first place. That it freezes the whole PC so quickly makes it harder to diagnose.
For me, this doesn't sound like a linux problem, but rather one of hardware. I'd start by unplugging the PC and opening it up and give it a good examination. Blow any dust out, check all cables are connected.
Given the description, I'd pay particular attention to the CPU fan to ensure it's working and the heatsink is connected properly, as the CPU may be overheating. It could also be the PSU or a tiny crack in the motherboard, or bad ram, the a failing hard drive or.. various.
As you have three, that could be useful to swap parts around to rule out problems.
If I'm wrong, and it is a linux problem. then there may be something useful in /var/log/syslog that's still readable on the next boot. Also - try pinging the machine from another device on the network to see if it is really freezing. If the keyboard light works, and/or it's still pinging, then it's alive at some level. It may be that it's just the window manager that's broken and linux is still chugging away underneath.
