there's quite possibly an issue at some point in the chain. Bad DVD

You've neglected to mention what type of DVD, which is important. Data
DVD? Commercial film DVD? The latter will have DRM to negotiate.
I run lsusb and have discovered my device ID but the website I am
reading tells me I need a pid, where do I get that from please?
Where on earth did you find that nonsense? Ignore it.
Create mountpoint /mnt/BLAH and execute:
sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/BLAH
If it doesn't work post what dmesg says.
