Sometimes the FOSS community is quite remarkable.

Rocky linux has been announced, formed, and when I looked on their Slack yesterday, had over 4,000 people wanting to help out in any way they could. They're busy bringing their skills to bear, forming infrastructure, a website,  build systems, packaging methods. They're helped by many people from Centos, some of whom have jumped from the torpedoed ship.

Whether Rocky will emerge the best RHEL clone, or even releases a single package is a matter of time, but it looks damned impressive so far.

But they're not the only folks. Cloudlinux are releasing another bug-for-bug RHEL clone. They already have their own centos-a-like but are releasing a fully free one.

Oracle (boo, spit, heckle) have announced that "Why, yes. Our free OEL is really free. Honest. Why don't you believe us?"

It also turns out that Springdale have another RHEL clone that pre-dates Centos (but hardly anyone knew of it). CERN (the science guys) have their own distro too, although they're staying quiet on the subject.

It's genuinely heartening to see the positivity that can emerge from such a negative thing.
