    I got an energy monitor that clamped onto the incoming mains supply
    and measured the current flow.  Only problem was I have solar panels
    and the energy monitor gave nonsense readings when the panels were
    generating. Good for night time though. The monitor now sits in a
    drawer until I can get the energy to do something with it. (Sorry)

I have solar (and an old mechanical meter) so if anyone knows of a monitor that can read backwards I'd be interested to hear about it,
