My brother had a similar issue years ago when he also had a fax machine at home. Trying to get the answering machine and fax machine to answer in order was a pain. I rang VM and told them to take the voicemail service off my line, BT will as well if asked. It solves the problem of people thinking they have left a message and you not knowing about it as they get an engaged tone if you're on the phone - as you'd expect, so know to ring back later; also BT won't intercept your answering machine when you're out.
