Hello Julian,

It doesn't seem to be, although I don't know what the wwn-xxxxxxxxx
It's not.  Device name would be in there.  Mine are listed thus;

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 Dec 10 08:09 ata-HL-DT-ST_DVD-ROM_GDR-H30N
-> ../../sr1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 Dec 10 07:04 ata-Optiarc_DVD_RW_AD-5240S
-> ../../sr0

I'm no expert, but it's starting to look like a hardware issue to me.
Could be the drive itself, the i/f on the mobo, or maybe just a dodgy
cable or connector.

Maybe you've tried changing some (or all) of the above items, I can't
remember. If not, try plugging the drive into a different socket on the
mobo, swapping the drive cable, etc. Although first port of call might
be whether the drive is listed in the BIOS device list.

entries are.
Links to hard drives and their partitions. I only know because I added
'-l' to the ls command when I did mine.

Hi Brad,

My only issue with it being a hardware problem is that it does work /sometimes.  Once or twice I have put a DVD in the drive and it's automounted with a prompt asking me what I want to do.  Other times the disk has been in the drive at boot and it's been recognised and mounted, this being the more frequent behaviour.  I would have thought had it been a physical hardware issue it wouldn't have mounted at all.  Also as I've mentioned to bad apple previously, it's a triple-boot box - Windows XP, Windows 7 and Mint 15, and the drive behaves flawlessly in the other two OSs.  Worth a try though, but as I am in a wheelchair it will have to wait for the weekend until a friend visits who can pull the box for me - I'm in South Wales otherwise I am sure I would get offers from the LUG to assist with that.
