Plug the offending drive into your laptop, and then issue "dmesg" in a
terminal - have a look at the last few (perhaps 10-20 lines) which
should have the relevant info regarding your OS spotting the drive
insertion, detecting partitions, etc.

Feel free to post them here if you can't make any sense of it.
