The latter. It just sits there and the only light is the power light. It is just not worth bothering with it. One bit of luck at least, my wife was using it until recently. She had another laptop of her own which she had not used for some time. About a month ago I suggested that I set up her original laptop for her (it did have XP on it, no more). So she is using her original one which is still working fine. How lucky is that?On 16/06/13 16:52, Neil Winchurst wrote:As a final note on this episode, I was using the laptop today and it has finally died on me. It was given to me some years ago and it was quite old then. So I guess I am now in the market for a replacement, without any OS installed. Oh well, thanks for everyone who replied. Still have the desktop of course. NeilBad luck Neil. When you say "dead", how dead do you mean? Are we talking dead as in weird noises from inside the casing and won't boot reliably, or dead as in no lights, no sounds and no sign of anything happening at all?
It may be of interest to you, and others on the list. I am looking for a machine without an OS of course. I have come across a UK company which will let you configure your machine for them to build to your spec. And this includes no OS. Here is the URL
