It is about encryption. Of, among other things, email.

Encryption is good, and important. So is locking your door. If the
number of people that need to be able to open that door is rather big
(because, for instance, it's the door to a shop), you'll end up
hanging the key to the door next to it, to keep it usable. So you may
as well not have put the lock there in the first place.

Same with encryption really. If the whole list is able to read the
email, then it's so widely spread, there's no point in encryption.
