I booted system rescue disk
mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/hddroot
cd /etc/X11
found that there WAS a Xorg.conf.backup so i renamed it,
reboot

login to gnome

here is where it goes wrong

# apt-get upgrade
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

# dpkg --configure -a
