Hi All,

I'm getting *very* slow speeds on my network. Pretty basic setup.. Virginmedia Superhub, NAS, PC. Data between the NAS and PC obviously going through the Superhub. All three devices have Gigibit ports, however I am getting speeds between 3 and 10Mb/s - varies depending on file size of course. My main concern is the cable in use. Currently I'm using Cat5e and the forums online give conflicting information regarding its' suitability, ranging from 'it may work' to 'it should work', up to 'it will work'. So I thought I'd ask a reliable known source, you guys and gals :) I don't want to be ripping out wiring and replacing it with expensive Cat6a (for example) if that's not where the problem lies.

Any and all advice appreciated.

How do you measure the speed from the NAS? How do you know it's not just
slow.. Or can you ssh into it - Linux/BSD, etc. ?

Easy to check on your PC though - just use ifconfig eth0 and check for
errors...

e.g. smal lextract from one of mine:

          RX packets:43044421 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:29870893 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

And check that the interface really is in full duplex mode with

  sudo mii-tool eth0

and

  ethtool eth0

although not all interfaces support these.

If you can logon to the NAS and it's linux, then see if it has iperf, then
you can run some iperf sessions between the NAS and the PC, and you can
always just connect the 2 together without going via the "superhub" to do
some more tests...

Not physically possible to move anything around unfortunately as I'm in a wheelchair and the hub is on top of a wardrobe (for best WiFi coverage). Weirdly I can't log into the NAS at the moment.. all I get is an update password prompt, but yes it does run Linux. Unfortunately as I was in university until recently the PC is running Windows 7 (for compatibility with software required on the course). Basically the main measurement is by what Windows says, however I have done it previously the hard way, with a stopwatch and timing how long it took to transfer 60Gb - result that time was 5Mb/sec, so there is definitely a problem somewhere.
