I've been running slow for a while and so ran some tests and got download speeds of 0.49 meg despite the modem saying 2M. Ho Hum

You need to ask your ISP for the BRAS profile speed on your line. This
will be slower thant the line sync rate and may be much lower if the BT
kit decides that (a) your line is dodgy or (b) BT are being shits.

And see my earler post... Over their wholesale network (assuming you're
not an an LLU line), then BT guarantees a minimum of 2Mb/sec for 90% of
the peak-time... (I think - can't find the reference right now, but it's
not far from that if it's not that)

So - you ought to get 2Mb/sec most of the time. (or realistically 1.7Mb/sec which will be the max. BRAS profile speed for your line)

Best way to speedtest is to wget a file off a server... Maybe someone could put a couple of 5MB file on the dcglug server to wget...

All tests - including wgetting from a server etc ran dog slow before I managed to get the BT onliine test to run after which all ran well. I was trying to point out that the BT test resets the line at their end before running the tests which often clears a lot of faults. In fact I wonder if it wouldnt run the test until it 'cleared' the line which was why it checking user details ...
